Abstract

Lung protective ventilation has shown to be an effective strategy of ventilation in perioperative patients. However, anesthesia providers often still employ traditional modes of ventilation. To improve the knowledge and utilization of lung protective ventilation during general anesthesia a clinical practice tool was developed. A PowerPoint educational program was utilized as the initial implementation of the lung protection tool. The practice guide and educational program was presented to anesthesia providers and PACU staff at a Southern Illinois Hospital. A pre/post survey served as the method of evaluation. The pre/post survey assessed the participant’s knowledge and utilization of lung protective ventilation before and after the implementation of the project. The results of the surveys indicated an increase in knowledge and utilization of lung protective ventilation after implementation of the education program and clinical practice guide. It appears that as providers’ knowledge increased, they were more willing to employ these ventilation strategies. The results demonstrate that practice change can occur through education. The predicted long-term impact would be continued use of lung protective ventilation, continued interest to increase knowledge through education and the dissemination of said education.
